Question 3

The neighbourhood seed swap

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

The seed swap took place in the church hall on a wet Sunday afternoon. Entry was free, and people could take a packet even if they had brought nothing to exchange. I arrived with saved sunflower seeds in six paper envelopes. A volunteer asked me to write the plant name and the year of collection on each one. The tables were arranged by the type of plant, with vegetables on one side and flowers on the other.

I chose climbing beans and a packet of marigolds. There was also a table where visitors could ask gardening questions. I learned that the beans would need supports, so I made a note to find some canes before sowing them. At four o'clock the remaining packets were packed away for a school gardening club. Nobody counted how many packets each visitor had contributed. The purpose, the organiser said, was to help more people begin growing, not to make every exchange exactly equal.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Choose the four true statements below. Write their four letters in the answer box. Choose no more than four; if more are given, only the first four distinct letters will be marked.
