Opening the swimming pond
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
I arrived at the outdoor swimming pond before seven to help with the morning checks. The supervisor read the water temperature while I counted the rescue equipment and checked that the changing-room doors opened freely. A notice at the entrance explained that the shallow section would remain closed because a handrail was being repaired. The rest of the pond was due to open at eight, after the supervisor had completed the safety checklist.
A regular swimmer arrived early and asked whether she could go in immediately. I explained that the checks were not finished and directed her to the benches outside. She waited there with a flask. At eight, the supervisor removed the rope across the main entrance. I stayed at the desk to check membership cards rather than entering the water myself. The first hour passed quickly. I had imagined volunteering would mean spending more time swimming; that morning it meant making sure other people could begin their swim properly.
