Question 17

The refill-shop trial

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

I visited the new refill shop with three clean jars and a shopping list. At the door, an assistant showed me how to weigh the empty jars and write their weights on small labels. This meant I would pay for the contents rather than the glass. I filled one jar with rice and another with oats. The third was intended for washing powder, but I discovered that its lid did not close properly, so I used a paper bag supplied by the shop.

The checkout receipt listed the weight of each purchase. I had bought less rice than I usually did because I could choose the amount instead of taking a fixed packet. The trip took longer than an ordinary supermarket visit, partly because I was learning the system. At home I transferred the washing powder to a secure container and put a better lid beside the empty jar for next time. I had expected the difficult part to be remembering the jars; it turned out to be remembering which ones actually worked.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Choose the four true statements below. Write their four letters in the answer box. Choose no more than four; if more are given, only the first four distinct letters will be marked.
