Question 6

Sorting the donated books

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

I volunteered at the charity warehouse on a Thursday morning. Six crates of donated books stood beside the sorting table, and my first job was to check them for loose pages or water damage. Books suitable for sale went into blue boxes; damaged ones went into a separate recycling container. The supervisor explained that an old publication date was not, by itself, a reason to reject a book. Some of the oldest volumes were the ones customers most often requested.

After an hour I found a postcard between the pages of a gardening manual. I gave it to the supervisor, who put it in the lost-property drawer. We did not know who had donated that particular crate. At noon I stopped sorting and helped label the boxes for the shop van, which would collect them the following day. My hands were dusty, but I had begun to recognise the difference between a book that looked old and one that could no longer be read.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Choose the four true statements below. Write their four letters in the answer box. Choose no more than four; if more are given, only the first four distinct letters will be marked.
