Recording the village memories
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
Our history group borrowed a recorder to collect memories of the old cinema. I interviewed Mrs Patel in her sitting room on Wednesday. Before switching on the recorder, I explained where the interview would be stored and asked her permission to record it. She agreed but requested that one story about a neighbour should not be included in the public version. I wrote this clearly in my notebook.
The interview lasted forty minutes. Mrs Patel remembered the red seats and the way the queue curved around the corner on wet evenings. When a delivery interrupted us, I paused the recording rather than leave it running. Afterwards I made a copy of the audio and labelled it with the date. We would send Mrs Patel a transcript to check before adding any extracts to the exhibition. I had arrived with twelve prepared questions, but her description of the Saturday children's programme led us into subjects I had not thought to ask about.
