An environmental chemist is investigating how the pH of acidic industrial runoff changes during a treatment process.

The chemist used the following method:

  • Step 1: Measure 50 cm3 of the acidic runoff (containing dilute sulfuric acid) into a beaker using a measuring cylinder.
  • Step 2: Use a clean glass rod to transfer a single drop of the runoff onto a piece of universal indicator paper and record the pH.
  • Step 3: Add 0.2 g of magnesium oxide powder to the beaker and stir thoroughly.
  • Step 4: Use the glass rod to transfer a drop of the resulting mixture onto a fresh piece of universal indicator paper and record the pH.
  • Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the recorded pH no longer changes.

State the name of an instrument that could be used to measure the pH of the mixture in Step 4 with greater precision than universal indicator paper.
