A student uses the following method to prepare a specimen of the insoluble salt, silver chloride (AgClAgClAgCl):

  • Pour 50 cm3 of silver nitrate solution into a beaker.
  • Add a few drops of sodium chloride solution until a white precipitate is observed.
  • Allow the precipitate to settle to the bottom of the beaker.
  • Pour off the liquid from the top.
  • Use a spatula to transfer the wet solid silver chloride onto a watch glass.

Explain two improvements that should be made to this method to increase both the amount (yield) and the purity of the silver chloride obtained.
