What examiner reports are actually for
An examiner report is written after an examination series. It comments on how candidates handled particular questions, highlights strong performance and explains where answers could be improved. Reports should be read beside the relevant question paper and mark scheme because comments often refer to exact wording, diagrams or sources.
OCR explicitly describes its reports as constructive guidance for future candidates. It also notes that questions answered well overall may not appear in the report. Silence does not mean a topic is unimportant.
Before using any report, check:
- the qualification is GCSE Economics rather than International GCSE or A Level
- the specification and exam board match your course
- the report belongs to the same paper as the question paper
- you have the corresponding mark scheme available
- you are looking for patterns across several series, not trying to predict one paper

The exact meaning of a command word should come from your exam board's specification and assessment guidance. Broadly, however:
- Identify requires a relevant feature or answer.
- Calculate requires a numerical result, normally with working and appropriate units.
- Explain requires connected reasoning.
- Analyse requires a developed chain showing how or why an effect occurs.
- Evaluate or discuss requires competing considerations and a reasoned judgement.
The marks provide another clue. A short question does not need an essay. A high-tariff response cannot usually be completed with disconnected statements.
During practice, underline the command word and circle the context before writing. This small pause prevents a surprisingly expensive mistake: answering a familiar question rather than the one on the page.
Application must use the context
Reports frequently distinguish between generic economics and applied economics. Writing that lower interest rates may increase consumption could show knowledge. Applying that reasoning means using the circumstances supplied, such as household borrowing, business investment, confidence or the condition of the economy.
Source material is not background scenery. If a table, chart or extract is provided, look for:
- the direction of change
- the size of the change
- comparisons between groups or periods
- an unusual value or exception
- units, time periods and scale
- evidence that supports or weakens an argument
Quoting a figure is not enough by itself. The answer must explain what that figure suggests and why it matters to the question. Equally, copying a sentence from an extract without economic reasoning rarely demonstrates analysis.

Diagrams must contribute to the argument
A familiar examiner comment is that candidates draw an inaccurate diagram, omit labels or produce a correct diagram that is never used in the written answer.
For a market diagram, check that:
- each axis is labelled correctly
- demand and supply curves are identifiable
- the original and new positions are clear
- the direction of any shift matches the stated cause
- equilibrium price and quantity are marked where required
- the written analysis refers to the change shown
A change in the price of the product generally creates movement along an existing demand or supply curve. A relevant non-price determinant can shift a curve. Confusing these two ideas changes the economics, not merely the appearance of the sketch.
A diagram is evidence within an explanation. If it shows supply shifting left, the written answer should identify the cause, describe the effect on equilibrium and connect that result to the question's context.

Evaluation is different. It asks whether the argument always holds, how important it is and what could alter the result. Useful considerations include:

- the time period

“It depends” is not evaluation until the answer states what it depends on and explains how that factor changes the judgement. A conclusion should select the strongest argument using reasoning already developed, rather than introducing a new idea in the final sentence.

Treating revision as definition collection
Definitions create a foundation, but most marks also require application or reasoning. Practise turning each concept into a contextual chain.
Ignoring units and working
A calculator answer without method, rounding or units is vulnerable. Write enough for the examiner to follow the calculation.
Describing data without interpreting it
Saying a value rose is description. Explain the scale, comparison and economic implication.
Drawing a diagram and abandoning it
Refer to the diagram in the analysis. State what shifted or moved and what happened to equilibrium.
Giving balanced points without a judgement
Two sides are not automatically evaluation. Decide which effect is more significant and justify that decision.
Using the wrong report
International GCSE, GCSE and A Level Economics are separate qualifications. Even reports from another UK board may use different question structures. Always begin with your specification.
