Question 24

A student makes chains of silicone bands by joining them together with S-hooks. He uses a force meter to stretch each chain along a meter ruler.

For each chain, he records:

  • the number of silicone bands
  • the length of the chain when the tension is 3.0 N
  • the length of the chain when the tension is 1.5 N

Then he calculates the difference in length for each chain.

a.

The table below shows some of his results.

Number of silicone bandsLength when tension = 3.0 N (cm)Length when tension = 1.5 N (cm)Difference in length (cm)

Calculate the missing difference in length.

b.

The student measures the length of one S-hook from the chain against the ruler.

An S-hook placed horizontally against a metric ruler spanning from 14 cm to 18 cm with millimeter markings. The leftmost end of the S-hook aligns vertically with the 14.2 cm mark, and the rightmost end aligns vertically with the 17.6 cm mark.

Estimate the length of this S-hook.

c.

Suggest two ways that the student could improve his measuring technique when measuring the chains.
