Question 7

In a cultivar of summer squash (Cucurbita pepo), fruit colour is determined by the epistatic interaction of two genes, W/w W/w\,W/w and Y/yY/yY/y, which assort independently:

  • The dominant allele W W\,W acts as an inhibitor, preventing the conversion of a white precursor molecule into any pigment. The recessive allele w w\,w is non-functional, allowing pigment synthesis to proceed.
  • The dominant allele Y Y\,Y codes for an enzyme that converts green pigment into yellow pigment. The recessive allele y y\,y produces a non-functional enzyme, meaning the pigment remains green.

A plant heterozygous at both loci (WwYyWwYyWwYy) is self-pollinated. What is the expected phenotypic ratio of the F2 F_2\,F2 offspring?
