Researchers wanted to investigate whether conformity to majority influence develops similarly cross-culturally from early childhood into adulthood. They sampled 320 children and 180 adults of varying ages from two distinct socio-cultural environments: an urban German city and a rural Samoan community.
To measure conformity, participants took part in an adapted version of a classic conformity task where they had to choose between a clearly correct individual judgment and an incorrect majority consensus voiced by peers.
| Age | Urban German (%) | Rural Samoan (%) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 55 | 50 |
| 6 | 50 | 52 |
| 7 | 45 | 55 |
| 8 | 40 | 58 |
| 9 | 35 | 62 |
| 10 | 30 | 65 |
| 11 | 25 | 70 |
| 12 | 20 | 72 |
| 13 | 18 | 75 |
| 14 | 15 | 78 |
| 15 | 12 | 80 |
| 16 | 10 | 82 |
| Adult | 45 | 35 |
Analyse the data in Table 1 to explain two conclusions that the researchers investigating conformity and culture might draw from these results.
