A neuroimaging study investigated the structural connectivity between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in individuals with a history of reactive aggression. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans showed a 30% reduction in white matter tract integrity (fractional anisotropy) between the left amygdala and the orbitofrontal cortex in highly aggressive individuals compared to age-matched controls. This structural deficit was associated with a failure of the prefrontal cortex to down-regulate amygdala activity during anger-induction tasks.
