Two independent bookshops, Page Turner and Novel Idea, operate on the same high street in a small historic town.
The bookshops are competing for a limited pool of local book buyers. This competition has led staff at the two shops to dislike one another. They often make derogatory comments about each other's stock and mock the rival shop's window displays. Recently, staff have even left anonymous negative online reviews on the other shop's social media pages.
However, the staff at both shops recently joined forces to organise a town-wide literary festival in order to win a regional arts grant that would boost tourism and benefit both of their businesses.
Using realistic conflict theory, explain the behaviour of the staff at the two bookshops.
