Question 28

An engineer is testing an electromagnetic sensor system.

a.

She uses a long, cylindrical coil (solenoid) carrying a direct current. Describe how she can experimentally determine both the shape and the direction of the magnetic field surrounding this active solenoid.

[3]
b.

To calibrate a sensor, she mounts two broad, flat magnetic plates parallel to each other. The diagram below shows the magnetic field lines in the region between these plates.

Magnetic field between parallel plates

Explain how this diagram shows that the magnetic field in this region is uniform.

[2]
c.

The engineer connects a closed, rectangular single-turn loop of wire to a sensitive microammeter.

The loop is slid horizontally at a constant speed into the region between the magnetic plates. Explain why a current is registered on the microammeter as the loop enters the field.

[2]
d.

Suggest two modifications to the experiment that would increase the magnitude of the detected current, without changing the physical wire loop itself.
