An investigation is carried out to determine the factors required for photosynthesis using a potted plant with green leaves.

Before starting the investigation, the plant is kept in a dark room for 72 hours to destarch its leaves.

Following this, two leaves on the plant are prepared as follows:

  • Leaf 1: A strip of opaque aluminium foil is wrapped securely around the middle of the leaf, leaving the tip and the base exposed. This leaf is left in the open air.
  • Leaf 2: This leaf is completely uncovered but is sealed inside a transparent polythene bag containing a beaker of sodium hydroxide pellets to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2\text{CO}_2CO2​).

The plant is then placed under a high-intensity lamp for 24 hours. After this period, both leaves are detached and tested for the presence of starch using iodine solution.
