An experiment is designed to investigate the conditions required for photosynthesis using a plant with variegated leaves (where the outer margin is white and the center is green).

Before the experiment, the plant is destarched by keeping it in a dark cupboard for 48 hours.

After destarching, two leaves on the plant are treated as follows:

  • Leaf A: A strip of black paper is secured across the middle of the leaf, covering both a portion of the green area and the white area. This leaf is left exposed to normal air.
  • Leaf B: This leaf is completely uncovered but is sealed inside a transparent flask containing a solution of potassium hydroxide, which absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2\text{CO}_2CO2​).

The plant is then placed under bright light for 24 hours, after which both leaves are tested for the presence of starch using iodine solution.
