A student sets up an electrical circuit with a single lamp connected to a d.c. power supply, as shown in Figure 1.

The student then adds a second, identical lamp in series, as shown in Figure 2. The power supply maintains the exact same potential difference as before.

State and explain how the brightness of one of the lamps in Figure 2 compares to the brightness of the single lamp in Figure 1.
