After the Storm

Text 1: The Greenhouse, by Mara Ellison

An original short story extract.

By the time Nia reached the school greenhouse, the storm had passed. Water dripped from the roof into the empty pots. The door stood open, knocking softly against its frame.

Nia stepped inside and called for the tortoise. Her voice sounded small among the rows of benches. A tray of seed packets had fallen to the floor, and muddy marks crossed the tiles towards the far end.

She followed them slowly. Behind the last bench, a leaf shifted. Nia stopped. Then the tortoise pushed its head out from beneath a watering can. She let out a breath she had been holding and crouched beside it.

How does Mara Ellison use language and structure to show Nia’s worry changing as she searches the greenhouse?

You could write about:

  • words and phrases that create an uneasy atmosphere
  • how the search builds towards the discovery.
