The Missing Beat
Text 1: Stop Line, by Safiya Mercer
An original novel extract.
The printing press had been running since dawn: four blunt beats, a pause, four blunt beats, a pause. Then one beat came back thin.
Mara struck the stop bar.
The machine shuddered into silence. Joel pulled the newest sheet from the tray and held it towards her. Clean edges. Even ink. Not a crease in it.
‘Why have you stopped?’
Mara cut the power and placed her palm against the metal casing. Her eyes closed. Behind them, the unfinished orders stood in waist-high stacks.
‘There’s nothing wrong with the pages,’ Joel said. ‘We’re already late.’
Mara waited until the last wheel became still. She drew a chalk line across its rim, then turned it once by hand. At the chalk mark, something clicked inside the machine. She turned the wheel again.
Click.
The sound came at exactly the same point.
Mara removed the narrow cover beside the paper track. A loose screw lay above the row of cogs, jumping in its groove whenever the wheel passed beneath it. She lifted it out between finger and thumb.
‘Another turn under power would have dragged this through the cogs,’ she said.
She secured the cover, restored the power and pressed the start button. Four blunt beats filled the room again. Joel watched the first perfect sheet slide into the tray. Mara had already reached for the next stack of paper.
