Question 117

Text 1: The Bell Below, by Rowan Mercer

An original short story extract.

Mara checked the rope at the quarry edge and lowered herself into the dark water. She had dived the flooded passage before; she knew where the roof dipped and where the pale stone opened into a chamber. At the entrance, her lamp made a small gold circle, and she smiled at the familiar silence.

The passage tightened. Stone brushed her shoulder. Her bubbles struck the ceiling and came back as a quick, uneven tapping. Mara turned sideways and pushed on, though the rope had begun to drag across her glove. Ahead, the lamp found a crack too narrow to enter. She stopped. In the sudden stillness, the rope pulled once, then slackened.

Back at the quarry edge, Mara sat dripping beside the rope. She looked down at the black water. The chamber would still be there, she thought, but it no longer seemed to be waiting for her. She coiled the rope carefully and left the lamp switched off.

How does Rowan Mercer use language and structure to present Mara’s confidence and the dangers of the dive, and to show how the experience changes her view of the passage?

You should use relevant subject terminology to support your answer.
