The Kiln Door
Text 1: The Quiet Heat, by Eluned Price
An original short story extract.
The kiln had been cooling since dawn, and Nia had found seven reasons to pass it. Each time, her hand went to the iron door and withdrew. The kiln kept its secret behind the metal. Inside, the exhibition bowl waited on the top shelf. She had shaped it over three evenings, smoothing the rim until her thumb knew every curve.
At noon, Nia opened the kiln. Heat pressed against her face. There it was.
A black line crossed the bowl’s blue glaze from rim to foot. It looked like a river drawn by a shaking hand. Nia lifted the bowl with her gloved hands. The crack gave a faint click beneath her fingers. Below it, six cups had held their shape. The cups shone. The bowl did not. She placed it on the worktable and closed the kiln door.
The exhibition opened in two hours. From behind the metal came a second click. Nia looked at the clock, but did not reach for the door.
