Strontium is a Group 2 alkaline earth metal located below calcium in the periodic table.
When a clean piece of strontium metal is added to a beaker of cold water, a vigorous chemical reaction occurs to produce strontium hydroxide, Sr(OH)2\text{Sr(OH)}_2Sr(OH)2, and a gas.
