The extraction of copper can involve the reduction of copper(II) oxide, CuO\text{CuO}CuO, by carbon, C\text{C}C. During this reaction, the copper(II) oxide is reduced to copper metal, Cu\text{Cu}Cu, and the carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide, CO2\text{CO}_2CO2​.
