Explain how the human kidney filters blood and selectively reabsorbs useful substances to form urine.

In your answer, you should refer to named structures of the nephron and the physical processes involved.

A detailed schematic diagram of a single nephron. On the left, a branch of the renal artery (afferent arteriole) enters a knot of capillaries called the glomerulus, which is cupped by the Bowman's capsule. The capsule leads into a winding proximal convoluted tubule, which descends into the medulla as the loop of Henle, climbs back up as the distal convoluted tubule, and finally joins a vertical collecting duct. A network of blood capillaries closely surrounds the tubules and collecting duct, illustrating the pathway for exchange between blood vessels and the tubule lumen.
