Revise algebra by building confidence with one skill at a time, then mixing those skills together in exam-style questions.

Check the foundations first

Make sure you can confidently:

  • simplify expressions
  • expand and factorise brackets
  • solve linear equations
  • substitute values into formulae
  • rearrange simple formulae

If one step feels uncertain, practise that skill before moving to longer questions.

Follow a repeatable method

  1. Read one worked example.
  2. Cover the solution and repeat it yourself.
  3. Complete five similar questions.
  4. Mark them immediately.
  5. Correct every error in a different colour.

Example

To solve 3x+7=223x + 7 = 223x+7=22, subtract 7 from both sides and then divide by 3:

3x=15 3x = 15 3x=15 x=5 x = 5 x=5

Always substitute your answer back into the original equation when you have time. It is a quick way to catch sign and arithmetic errors.

Once individual skills feel secure, use mixed questions so you must decide which method to apply without being told.
