Dr. Aris, a child psychologist at a development clinic, observes a group of toddlers in a play therapist's room. The toddlers happily explore the various climbing frames and interactive toys, but periodically look back at their mothers for reassurance and quickly become highly distressed if their mothers leave the room for a few minutes.
Dr. Aris is also assessing a seven-year-old child, Rowan, who has recently started showing a complete lack of empathy, has difficulty forming close bonds with peers, and has been caught stealing toys from other children at school. Rowan was separated from his mother for his entire first year of life when she was receiving intensive treatment in a specialized medical facility abroad.
