Question 201

Marcus is currently serving an 8-year sentence in a category B correctional facility.

Throughout his adult life, Marcus has experienced chronic emotional dysregulation, frequently assuming that others' neutral behaviours are calculated attempts to disrespect or challenge him. For example, in a local gym prior to his arrest, Marcus noticed another member glance at him and whisper to a trainer. Marcus immediately assumed they were plotting to humiliate him. The only reason Marcus did not initiate a physical confrontation on the spot was the sudden arrival of two security guards patrolling the floor.

Marcus’s convictions include conspiracy to commit grand larceny and Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH). He spent months meticulously planning the theft of high-end timepieces from a secure vault. However, during his escape, a delivery driver unexpectedly blocked the exit alley. Marcus panicked, lost control, and repeatedly struck the driver with a heavy iron tyre iron to force his escape.

Marcus has recently been referred to a structured cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) program within the prison.

Assess the effectiveness of one cognitive-behavioural treatment for Marcus.
