Question 329

Dr Aris is a forensic psychologist preparing a psychological case formulation for Julian, an offender being considered for a transition to a community-based rehabilitation programme. Julian has been repeatedly involved in physical altercations with other residents and has refused to participate in the facility's vocational workshops.

In reviewing Julian’s files, Dr Aris notes that Julian experienced severe neglect and instability in multiple foster care placements during early childhood. Julian has a long-standing history of alcohol dependency and lived on the streets for several years before his incarceration. Currently, Julian's interactions with staff and peers are highly defensive; he often interprets neutral comments as hostile and uses aggression to establish dominance.

Discuss how Dr Aris could use a psychological case formulation to understand the function of Julian's offending and non-compliant behaviour.

You must refer to the details of Julian’s case in your answer.
