A wave energy generator uses a float that is constrained to slide vertically up and down on a vertical guide pole. As water waves pass, the float rises and falls.

The diagram below shows the profile of a water wave at a certain instant.

A vertical guide pole is fixed in the water. A hollow float is threaded onto the pole so it can only move vertically. The surface of the water is a sine wave moving horizontally from left to right. The highest point of the wave (crest) is labelled level A. The lowest point of the wave (trough) is labelled level B. The float is currently at level A.  A horizontal wave direction arrow points to the right.

State the definition of the term wavelength.
