An analytical chemist is investigating a white powder retrieved from a historic building's woodwork, suspected to be a copper-based preservative. To test for the presence of the metal cation, they carry out a flame test using the following procedure:

  1. A nichrome wire is cleaned with concentrated hydrochloric acid and heated in a flame.
  2. The wire is dipped into the powdered sample.
  3. The sample-laden wire is placed into a yellow, luminous Bunsen burner flame.

The chemist is unable to observe any characteristic coloration from the sample.

Describe the adjustment that must be made to the Bunsen burner's air hole, and explain why this change is critical for identifying the characteristic flame colour of the metal ion.
