A student carries out a flame test to identify the metal ion present in an unknown salt sample using the following method:

  • Step 1: Dip a clean nichrome wire loop into concentrated hydrochloric acid.
  • Step 2: Touch the wet loop to the solid salt sample so that some solid adheres to it.
  • Step 3: Hold the loop in a yellow, luminous Bunsen burner flame (with the air-hole closed).

This method will not allow the student to easily identify the metal ion.

Explain how Step 3 should be improved to enable the characteristic flame colour of the metal ion to be clearly observed.
