Step 1: Dip a nichrome wire into concentrated hydrochloric acid, then hold the wire in a hot, blue Bunsen burner flame. Step 2: Dip the wire into the hydrochloric acid again, then touch the wire to the potassium chloride crystals so some adhere to it. Step 3: Hold the wire in the hot, blue Bunsen burner flame and observe the colour produced.

State the purpose of Step 1 in this procedure.
