Question 58

A student investigated the change in mass when hydrated copper sulfate was heated.

The word equation for the reaction is:

hydrated copper sulfate⇌anhydrous copper sulfate+water \text{hydrated copper sulfate} \rightleftharpoons \text{anhydrous copper sulfate} + \text{water} hydrated copper sulfate⇌anhydrous copper sulfate+water

This is the method used:

  1. Add 3.5 g3.5\text{ g}3.5 g of hydrated copper sulfate to an empty boiling tube.
  2. Measure the mass of the boiling tube and contents.
  3. Heat the boiling tube and contents gently for 30 seconds.
  4. Allow the boiling tube and contents to cool.
  5. Measure the mass of the boiling tube and contents.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until the mass of the boiling tube and contents does not change.

The table below shows the results.

a.

Determine the mass of the empty boiling tube.

[1]
b.

Explain why the mass of the boiling tube and contents decreased.

[2]
c.

Suggest why the boiling tube and contents were heated until the mass did not change.

[1]
d.

When 250 g250\text{ g}250 g of hydrated copper sulfate is heated until the mass does not change, 78.2 kJ78.2\text{ kJ}78.2 kJ of energy is taken in. The student heated 3.50 g3.50\text{ g}3.50 g of hydrated copper sulfate until the mass did not change. Calculate the energy taken in during this reaction. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.
