Yet findings in realistic educational settings are mixed, particularly for complex material. A break can create useful mental space, but it cannot replace retrieval practice, feedback or sleep.

The honest conclusion is modest: planned short breaks usually help manage fatigue, while a longer break remains useful after sustained or especially difficult work.
