Question 250

Dr Vance wanted to investigate the effectiveness of two different relapse-prevention programmes for individuals recovering from alcohol addiction after 6 months.

He sampled two groups of patients who had completed their respective recovery programmes:

  • 30 patients who underwent Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • 30 patients who underwent Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Dr Vance assessed each patient's recovery status at a 6-month follow-up, classifying them as either ‘Abstinent’ or ‘Relapsed’.

Table 1: Observed recovery outcomes after 6 months

Complete Table 2 to calculate the chi-squared statistic (χ2\chi^2χ2) for Dr Vance's data to two decimal places.
