A cognitive psychologist wanted to investigate whether there was a relationship between daily smartphone screen time and attentional lapse frequency during sustained attention tasks. Eight university student volunteers were recruited. Each participant's average daily screen time (measured in hours) was recorded using their phone's built-in tracker, and they completed a Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) to measure their total number of attention lapses (scored out of 45).
The results of the screen time tracking and the attention task are shown in Table 1.
| Participant | Daily screen time (hours) | Attention lapses /45 |
|---|---|---|
| A | 2.2 | 8 |
| B | 4.5 | 19 |
| C | 1.0 | 3 |
| D | 5.8 | 26 |
| E | 3.1 | 12 |
| F | 7.2 | 38 |
| G | 3.8 | 15 |
| H | 5.0 | 22 |
