Question 146

Research Methods: The 'Sound and Focus' Study

Researchers conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate whether auditory stimulation affects sustained attention in young adults. Participants performed a 30-minute continuous performance task (CPT) under one of two conditions: listening to binaural beats or listening to pink noise.

To ensure internal validity, the researchers implemented several control measures, including:

  1. Control 1: Asking participants to self-report their fatigue levels on a subjective 1 to 10 rating scale immediately before starting the attention task.
  2. Control 2: Allowing participants to use their own personal headphones or earbuds to listen to the audio files, instructing them to set the playback volume to "a comfortable, audible level" at the start of the session.

Explain how to improve the effectiveness of the two controls used in the 'Sound and Focus' study.
