A researcher investigated the effect of phonological similarity on short-term memory capacity. Ten participants completed a free recall task under two conditions: 'Phonologically Dissimilar' (words that sound different) and 'Phonologically Similar' (words that sound alike). The number of words correctly recalled by each participant in each condition is shown in Table 1.
Table 1: Number of words recalled under phonologically dissimilar and phonologically similar conditions
| Participant | Phonologically Dissimilar | Phonologically Similar |
|---|---|---|
| Participant A | 9 | 4 |
| Participant B | 12 | 9 |
| Participant C | 8 | 3 |
| Participant D | 10 | 7 |
| Participant E | 11 | 5 |
| Participant F | 14 | 10 |
| Participant G | 9 | 6 |
| Participant H | 11 | 4 |
| Participant I | 13 | 8 |
| Participant J | 8 | 4 |
| Mean | 10.5 | 6.0 |
