Liam conducted an experiment to investigate whether phonological similarity (words that sound similar) affects short-term memory recall.

He recruited his participants from a Year 12 Psychology class. Liam created two word lists, each consisting of ten target words.

  • List A (Phonologically Similar): Words that sound alike (e.g., cat, map, cab, cap).
  • List B (Phonologically Dissimilar): Words that sound different (e.g., key, bus, dog, pen).

Both lists were read aloud to all participants, and immediately afterwards, they had to recall as many of the words as they could.

The results of Liam's experiment are shown in Table 1.
