Zara's Research on Social Influence

Zara conducted a field experiment in an art gallery to investigate whether visitors conform to the behaviour of others. She observed how long visitors spent looking at a newly displayed modern painting under two different conditions:

  • Condition A: Three confederates were already standing and staring intently at the painting.
  • Condition B: No confederates were present near the painting.

Zara recorded the number of visitors who spent more than 10 seconds looking at the painting and those who spent 10 seconds or less. The results are shown in Table 1.
