Dr Vance is investigating the effect of post-event discussion on memory conformity in eyewitness testimony. She recruits two groups of participants:

  • Group 1: 40 participants who watched a video of a staged robbery and then discussed it with a confederate who introduced 3 false details.
  • Group 2: 40 participants who watched the same video but did not have any post-event discussion.

All participants then completed a recall questionnaire. Reporting at least one of the false details introduced by the confederate was classified as 'misled recall'.

The results of Dr Vance's study are shown in Table 1 below.
