Question 272

Dr. Beatrice conducted an observational study to investigate the effects of early day care duration on prosocial sharing behavior in preschool-aged children.

She selected her participants from parents and their three-year-old children who were attending a local weekend family festival on a Saturday afternoon.

She compared two groups of three-year-olds:

  • Group 1: The children spent less than 5 hours a week in a registered day care setting.
  • Group 2: The children spent over 35 hours a week in a registered day care setting.

She set up a structured play zone at the festival. The child was given a set of 10 attractive stickers. After two minutes, another child (a same-age confederate who had no stickers) entered the zone, sat at the table, and watched the participant play. Dr. Beatrice observed and rated the participant's prosocial sharing behavior. A score of 10 indicated 'immediate, spontaneous sharing of multiple stickers with no hesitation' and a score of 0 indicated 'extreme hoarding, hiding stickers, or active refusal to share'.
