Researchers wanted to investigate whether cooperative behavior is expressed similarly cross-culturally and how these tendencies develop from childhood into adulthood. They sampled 280 children and 150 adults of varying ages from two distinct socio-cultural environments: an urban Swedish city and a rural Kenyan community.
To measure cooperation, participants played a resource allocation game where they had to choose between a cooperative choice (benefiting both players equally) and a competitive choice (maximizing self-gain at the cost of the other).
