Dr. Chen investigated how schema-driven expectations influence reconstructive memory. Participants spent three minutes in a university biology laboratory under the pretense of waiting for an experiment to begin. The room contained several schema-consistent items (such as a microscope and a petri dish) and several schema-incongruent items (such as a toaster and a tennis racket). After leaving the room, participants were asked to recall as many items as they could.
