Dr Samantha conducted a field experiment to examine obedience to authority. She wanted to see if members of the public were more likely to obey a request to pick up a piece of litter when the requester wore a security guard uniform compared to casual clothes. She randomly allocated 60 passers-by, with 30 participating in Condition X (security guard uniform) and 30 participating in Condition Y (casual clothes).
Table 1: Number of participants who complied with the request in each condition
| Condition X (Security guard uniform) | Condition Y (Casual clothes) | |
|---|---|---|
| Complied with request | 24 | 9 |
| Did not comply with request | 6 | 21 |
