Disposable electronic cigarettes (vapes) have become one of the fastest-growing categories of consumer waste. In the UK, it is estimated that approximately 5 million disposable vapes are thrown away every single week — a fourfold increase from the previous year. Each disposable vape contains valuable materials, including lithium batteries and copper wiring, alongside hazardous chemical residues and non-biodegradable plastics. Across a year, the lithium discarded in these vapes is equivalent to the batteries needed to power approximately 5,000 electric vehicles, yet only a small fraction is recycled.
While rechargeable e-cigarettes and larger commercial vape systems achieve recycling and return rates of around 45% due to manufacturer-led trade-in schemes, cheap single-use vapes see a recycling rate of less than 10%. The vast majority end up in household general waste or as litter on streets. This low recycling rate imposes substantial external costs, including landfill fires ignited by damaged lithium batteries, toxic heavy metals (like mercury and lead) leaching into local water tables, and microplastic contamination.
To tackle this market failure, policy makers are considering several interventions. These include a complete ban on single-use vapes, deposit-return schemes (DRS), taxes on disposable plastics and lithium units, and public health/environmental awareness campaigns.
