An ecology student wants to estimate the population density of the beadlet anemone (Actinia equina) on a flat, rocky shore platform. The study area is a 10 m×30 m10\text{ m} \times 30\text{ m}10 m×30 m rectangular section of the shore (total area 300 m2).

The student uses the following method:

  • They walk across the area and throw a 0.5 m×0.5 m0.5\text{ m} \times 0.5\text{ m}0.5 m×0.5 m quadrat over their shoulder three times.
  • They count the number of anemones found inside the quadrat each time.
  • They calculate the mean number of anemones per quadrat and scale this up to estimate the total population.

State two improvements that could be made to this sampling method to obtain a more reliable and accurate estimate of the anemone population.
