A result that sits one mark below the grade you hoped for can make results day feel strangely unfinished. The GCSE remark cost in 2026 is normally charged per paper, ranging from £44.85\pounds 44.85£44.85 to £67.75\pounds 67.75£67.75 for a standard review of marking. Edexcel also lists a GCSE priority service at £60\pounds 60£60 per paper.

These are exam-board fees. Your school may charge a different amount, add an administration fee or cover the cost itself. Always ask your exams officer for the final price before agreeing.

GCSE remark cost checklist

Before requesting anything:

  • Check how many marks you are from the next grade boundary.
  • Ask a teacher to inspect your marked script where available.
  • Confirm whether the fee is per paper or for the whole qualification.
  • Ask whether your school adds an administration charge.
  • Understand that your mark and grade can rise, stay unchanged or fall.
  • Give written consent after results have been published.

MathsGenie’s guide to Edexcel GCSE grade boundaries explains why your total mark, rather than your result on one paper, determines the final grade.

Cost of a GCSE re-mark by exam board

The formal term is a review of marking, not a complete fresh re-mark. A reviewer checks whether the original examiner applied the mark scheme correctly. The fees below are the published June 2026 exam-board charges available on 30 July 2026.

Exam boardStandard review per paperGCSE priority reviewClerical re-check
AQA£44.85\pounds 44.85£44.85Not available£9.70\pounds 9.70£9.70
Pearson Edexcel£50.00\pounds 50.00£50.00£60.00\pounds 60.00£60.00£14.00\pounds 14.00£14.00
OCR£67.75\pounds 67.75£67.75Not available£12.00\pounds 12.00£12.00
WJEC/Eduqas£45.00\pounds 45.00£45.00Not available for GCSE£11.00\pounds 11.00£11.00

Pearson’s displayed fees cover the period ending 31 July 2026, so Edexcel students should confirm the charge with their centre before submitting an August request.

The important phrase is per paper. Requesting reviews for all three papers of a three-paper maths qualification could cost 3×£50=£1503 \times \pounds 50 = \pounds 1503×£50=£150 with Edexcel, before any school administration fee. Usually, the more sensible approach is to inspect the scripts and identify the paper where a marking error appears plausible.

Is a priority review available for GCSE maths?

For 2026, AQA, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas do not offer their priority review of marking service for GCSE qualifications. Pearson Edexcel lists a GCSE priority review at £60\pounds 60£60 per paper.

A priority review checks the same thing as a standard review; it is processed faster. It does not increase the chance of gaining marks. Standard reviews are normally completed within 202020 calendar days, while priority services aim for a shorter turnaround.

When is the fee refunded?

Exam boards generally waive the review fee when the review changes your overall subject grade. A small mark increase that leaves your grade unchanged may therefore still be charged.

Your school controls the application and payment process, so ask:

  • whether the exam-board fee will be returned to you;
  • whether any school administration charge remains payable;
  • which paper or papers are being submitted together.

The national deadline for standard June 2026 reviews is 24 September 2026, but schools commonly set earlier internal deadlines.

Should you request a review?

Being close to a boundary is a reason to investigate, not proof that the marking is wrong. Start by asking your maths teacher to compare the script with the mark scheme. MathsGenie’s guide to using GCSE mark schemes can help you understand method and accuracy marks.

A review is more defensible when a teacher can identify a specific response where the mark scheme may not have been applied correctly. If the script appears accurately marked, paying simply because the result is disappointing is unlikely to change it.

Common mistakes when requesting a remark

  • Assuming the quoted fee covers every paper.
  • Confusing a clerical re-check with a review of marking.
  • Believing the grade is protected from falling.
  • Missing the school’s earlier internal deadline.
  • Requesting every paper without first examining the available scripts.
  • Expecting a priority service to involve more generous marking.

Make the next decision calmly

A review can correct a genuine marking error, but it is not the only route forward. If the grade remains unchanged, use MathsGenie’s GCSE results day and next-steps FAQ to understand resits and progression options.

Then return to preparation with the free GCSE maths revision hub, Edexcel past papers, GCSE predicted papers and Edexcel mini tests. Revision lessons, practice questions, mark schemes and video solutions turn an uncertain result into a clear next step.
