Results Day can turn a small number into a very large feeling. You know your raw mark, but the letter beside it is what universities, colleges and employers will see. What do A-Level Psychology raw marks mean?

An A-Level Psychology raw mark is the number of marks awarded for your answers before it is compared with the qualification's grade thresholds. For linear A Levels, the marks from the required papers are combined to determine the overall result.

AQA Psychology has three papers worth $96$ marks each, giving:

Edexcel has papers worth $90$, $90$ and $80$ marks, giving a total of $260$ available raw marks. However, the published qualification-level boundary table uses a maximum mark of $270$ because the component marks are weighted when calculating the overall result. OCR has papers worth $90$, $105$ and $105$ marks, totalling $300$.

This is why comparing raw marks across boards is misleading. A mark of $200$ means something different when the maximum is $270$, $288$ or $300$. Always use the table for your own board.

How to read the mark-to-grade table

Each number is the lowest overall mark awarded that grade. For AQA in 2025, for instance, the $A$ threshold was $198$. Marks from $198$ up to $221$ therefore received an $A$, while $222$ was the first mark receiving an $A^{\ast }$.

Your grade is the highest threshold your total meets or exceeds. Falling one mark below a boundary places the result in the grade below unless a review of marking changes the total.

Component boundaries require more care. A notional grade on one paper does not become a separate qualification grade. A stronger performance on one paper can compensate for a weaker performance elsewhere because the overall total determines the final award.

Why the thresholds change each year

Grade boundaries are not fixed percentages. Exam boards set them after marking is nearly complete, using statistical evidence and senior examiners' judgements about the quality of students' work. If a paper proves more demanding, a comparable standard may require fewer raw marks; if it proves less demanding, the boundary may rise.
