A-Level Politics Marks per Grade: 2025 Thresholds

Results day can turn a small number into a large worry. You may know roughly how each paper went, but not whether the total means an A, a B or something else. The latest A-level politics marks per grade give you a useful reference: in June 2025, an A* required at least $175$ out of $231$ with AQA, while Edexcel required $177$ out of $252$.

Those figures are historical boundaries, not predictions. The exact June 2026 thresholds will not be published until A-Level results day on Thursday 13 August 2026.

Politics grade boundaries checklist

Before comparing a mark with a grade, confirm:

• your exam board -- usually AQA or Pearson Edexcel for A-Level Politics
• your Edexcel route -- Paper 3A covers the USA and Paper 3B covers global politics
• your total raw mark across all three papers
• the correct exam series
• that you are reading an overall qualification boundary, not a component boundary

A-level politics raw marks for AQA

AQA Politics specification 7152 consists of three equally weighted papers. Each is worth $77$ marks, producing a maximum qualification total of:

The table shows the minimum total raw mark for each June 2025 grade.

Edexcel specification 9PL0 also has three equally weighted papers, but each paper is worth $84$ marks. The maximum total is therefore:

$$84+84+84=252$$

Edexcel publishes separate overall boundaries for route 3A and route 3B. The A* threshold happened to be the same in 2025, but several other grades differed.

Do not compare an Edexcel total directly with AQA. The qualifications have different maximum marks. Why the marks needed can change

Grade boundaries are set after papers have been taken and marked. They can move because exam papers are not identical in difficulty from one year to the next. A demanding paper may have a lower threshold; a more accessible paper may have a higher one.

Raw marks, component boundaries and final grades

A raw mark is the mark awarded for your assessed work before it is interpreted as a qualification grade. Your overall grade comes from the combined qualification total.

Exam boards may also publish notional component boundaries for individual papers. These can help teachers understand performance, but they do not award separate paper grades. A weaker result on one component can be balanced by stronger marks elsewhere because the overall total determines the qualification grade.

Common mistakes when checking Politics grades

• Using 2025 as a confirmed 2026 boundary. Boundaries can move and the new figures are unknown before results day.
• Comparing percentages without checking maximum marks. AQA is marked out of $231$; Edexcel is marked out of $252$.
• Choosing the wrong Edexcel route. Route 3A and route 3B can have different thresholds.
• Treating a component boundary as a final grade. The overall qualification total is what matters.
• Rounding an estimated mark upwards. A boundary is a minimum. Being one mark below it means the lower grade unless a review changes the awarded mark.
